Kindly give me practical advices without prejudices

Sirs, I recently completed BCBA (Bachelor of Commerce and Business Administration)+ LL.B. (5 year integrated course after 10+2 Commerce.from Bangalore. Thereafter I applied for 3 courses at a stretch - LL.M, MBA (HR) and Company Secretary in the hope to get admission to atleast one of these postgraduate courses. As there was no entrance test for admission to CS, I received the Registration Number and the Study material with 5CDs yesterday. In the meanwhile I had appeared for the entrance exam for MBA and LLm, due to which, unexpectedly, I have been admitted to both MBA (HR) and LL.M, even though I needed to study one course at a time.

I was googling out the value of CS Vs. MBA Vs. LL..M but could not get any help. I thought the CS course needs only 18 months but i requires atleast 4 years including training. Now comparing CS with LL.M and MBA, I have finally concluded that in those 4 years, I can earn 2 postgraduate degrees, whereas CS will be only one course in the same period. When I sought the opinion from my uncle who is a CA, he asked me to pursue CS, whereas my professors are suggesting me to either to do MBA  and LL.M one by one.

I am completely in a fix to decide despite after googling out and taking suggestions from practical point of view. My interests are in leading a Company (in mid-level) or to join as an Assistant Professor in a Management or Law college. So all degrees may suit my needs and interests, but I have to choose only one.

Kindly give me suggestions from practical and real environmental perspective so that I may make up right decision within 2 days. As you all member have practical experience and have exposure of Corporate Sector, I am sure that you must be having proper guidelines for me.

Manisha, see MBA and LLM both are good qualifications but what really matters is the institute or college in which you get admitted to. See if the b-school you are getting into is renowned one...see how are the placements of that particular b-school and if possible talk to any students from that b-school about their placements. And same goes for LLM too . If it is a renowned law college u r getting into then its really worth and will be better than CS. Note that after qualifying CS and completing the 15months training you cannot expect salary more than Rs.20-25thousands per month in the starting or may be not even that unless you r a rank holder. Analyse well and decide. Good luck.

hi Manisha.........

I think LLM would be the right choice for you.....

I completely agree with what Ashis sir said " but What really matters is the institute or college in which you get admitted to ".

here's my unprejudiced advice to you:

Go for the course which is the most difficult. Your uncle being a CA is right. After CA, CS is the most difficult professional course in India. An MBA degree only from a top institute is valuable otherwise it is not worth even the paper on which the degree is printed. LLM is also difficult but the scope is limited to only law, whereas a person doing CS can enter into law, finance or management as the syllabus for CS includes all 3. Doing CS does not necessarily mean you have to work as a Company Secretary and so 4 years of training may not be necessary. There are exemptions also which you can apply for, I think.

@ Manisha...

Please do not spoil your excellent career by changing the course which has no relevance in reality because no one will be ready to "appoint" you as an intern after CS Professional examination, not to speak of appointing you as a Company Secretary. I am not discouraging you are narring my real life experience. After 10+2 I cleared CS in first attempt of every examination but no one inducted me as an intern. Then I got in touch with a practising CS who demanded Rs. 25000/- for the training which I instantly paid because I was hoping to get some good job after the course. When I failed to get appointment even as an Asstt. Secretary and then as an entry-level Executive in HDFC Bank, I had to join a college as a "P.A. to the Principal" on monthly salary of Rs. 15000/-. Last month the college recruited a distance education MBA passed guy as an Asstt. Administraitve Officer on month salary of Rs. 20000/-. When I demanded a raise in my salary referring to 2 years of my experience on the same salary but with many appreciation letters from the management, the Principal and the Board of Control told me that I hold only a "diploma" whereas the Asstt. Administrative Officer is a graduate and postgraduate in management. When I told that I may be given some better designation, he replied that I am holding the designation for which I am "qualified". The Director told that I would have been a Secretary to the Directors in the Company and I am working on same position in their college as a "Secretary/PA". I have to leave this job now after getting such a response towards my professional qualification. I had joined all kind of coachings and paid tuitions and my parents invested a lot of money in bearing expenses of my to and fro and books. I wanted to return the same to my parents and thus I had to earn whatever was being paid to me. Now I can not stand that a MBA distance education second division holder should be my Officer whom I have to report everyday. The value about CS is artificially created by the ICSI by way of giving massive advertisements and carrying out online propaganda. Please go in for MBA because you will get more than Rs. 40000 after studying regular MBA even if the college is not a prestigious B-School. This forum is replete with the experiences shared by the cs students and you should go through this forum instead of relying on google or yahoo search engines.

If someone is out here to tell you advantages or value of CS, ask them to fetch a job for me even for Rs. 15000/- and I'll join immediately. You need not believe in my suggestions because I want you to read for yourself the whole material available in this website.

Manisha...First of all, congratulations for getting an admission into LLM and MBA.

You cannot get an admission to LLM and MBA everyyear. Since, you have got an admission into LLM, you  can join that course. If possible, parallelly do CS also. (If you find pursuing CS would be difficult at this point, just keep the course on hold. Anyway, the CS registration would be valid for 5 years. Later on, if you have time, you can pursue the course.Practically speaking, since you have already registered for CS, you can do it either now or after 2- 3 years or parallelly with your other courses (since it  is a correspondance course). You can just complete CS inter and Final without any articleship.)

From practical point of you, CS + LLB is a good combination. At the same time, LLB + LLM is also a good combination. So, you join LLM now and continue with your studies. (You join MBA only if you have got an admission in a reputed b-school. Else, dont go for it, because a fresh LLB in a good law firm get more salary than an MBA from an ordinary institute.

Further, you got admission into MBA (HR), which I feel is bit deviating from the 5 years of LLB you did (law vs HR). So, unless you have an inclination to become an HR in ur career, its better you skip this chance and pursue LLM (full-time) and CS if possible).

This is quite amazing. One is struggling to clear a single competitive test ever after having given the entire focus on it. But in this case this bright girl or  has cleared all the hurdles.

I do not agree with what Mr Mayank Garg has to say about CS profession or ICSI. I agree that he might have had a bitter experience after doing CS though it is not clear by his communication whether he completed CS or not. See if you look at any profession whether it is an MBA, CA or CS or law please mind NOBODY WILL OFFER YOU JOB ON A PLATE, unless you are capable and have demonstrated qualities.

Whether we are in CA or CS or law profession everybody has to struggle hard in initial years and even accepting a low salary. When I completed my CS two years ago  and got my first job, I accepted the job at a meagre salary of Rs. 15,000/- that too away from my hometown. But now two years later I am earning Rs. 40,000/- per month in the same organisation. So dont get discouraged by what Mr Garg has to say about CS and make your own judgment.

I would suggest you to go for CS now that you are already a Law graduate since CS+LLB is an excellant option and LLM will be an icing on the cake.
