IT Return Refund Status AY 2026-27

Filed and e-verified your ITR for AY 2026-27 and waiting for refund Here's how to track it:

1. Income Tax e-Filing Portal (Login Method)

Login at incometax.gov.in → "e-File" → "Income Tax Returns" → "View Filed Returns" → select AY 2026-27 → "View Details." This shows the full timeline — filed, e-verified, processed, refund determined, refund issued, along with the payment mode and last 4 digits of the credited account.

2. Without Login (Acknowledgement Number)

On the e-filing homepage, use the "Income Tax Return (ITR) Status" option under Quick Links → enter your 15-digit acknowledgement number and the mobile number used in the return → verify OTP.

Note: Refund tracking has now been consolidated into the e-filing portal, so treat it as the single source of truth — older articles pointing to the NSDL/Protean tracker are outdated.

Timeline to expect:

CPC Bengaluru typically processes returns within 15–30 days of e-verification, with refund credit taking around 20–45 days from e-verification. Most simple salaried returns land within 4–5 weeks.

Common reasons for delay/failure:

  • Bank account not pre-validated on the portal
  • Incorrect IFSC/account details
  • PAN not linked to Aadhaar
  • Return picked up for manual review

If refund failed: Login → Services → Refund Reissue Request → select AY 2026-27 → update/select a pre-validated bank account → submit.

The Section 143(1) intimation on the same screen shows the refund the department actually computed - worth checking before assuming a refund is "missing."

Compensation for delay: Under the Income Tax Act 2025, interest at 0.5% per month is payable on delayed refunds (replacing the earlier Section 244A).
