income from salaries

for calculations of income tax payable or for any other purpose what's the actual income ie wheather it's
(a) total salary
(b)gros salary
(c) actual salary received in hand
(d)gros salary declared in ITR in previous years
Some agencies are considering the amount actually received in hands as income, is it justified.
Please give details along with the concerned rules and sections.
