Investment banking isn’t one specific service or function. It is an umbrella term for a range of activities: underwriting, selling, and trading securities (stocks and bonds); providing financial advisory services, such as mergers and acquisition advice; and managing assets. Investment banks offer these services to companies, governments, non-profit institutions, and individuals. The action and players in investment banking are still centered in New York City and a few other money centers on the world, but the list of players is getting smaller as the industry consolidates. Today, leading banks include Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup’s Corporate and Investment Bank (whose investment banking arm was until recently known as Salomon Smith Barney), Credit Suisse First Boston, and JPMorgan Chase. If U want to get into IB you shd be very good at capital markets and all aspects relating to IB. As a CA ur job would be covering direct and indirect tax aspects, company law provision, SEBI and its takeover codes, Due diligence, Valuation and calculating the swap ratio. Mergers and acquisitions is the creme de la of investment banks. CA are in great demand in the M & A departments. so be good at these: Taxation of corporate restructuring Analyzing mergers and acquisitions and their effect on shareholder value Understanding the legal implications Working of the capital markets Try to understand all indurtries in brief by reading magazine like business today, capital markets etc. feel free to ask ne other query on finance
Hi Kisna thanks a lot for the information.I am always gaining some knowledge abt the capital markets & have cleared some of the NCFM modules too..but was just in confusion as wht type of work in my articleship period would basically help me in future if i m planning fo IB.should i go for internal audit or taxation or work with firm having capital market related work(i.e abt NSDL,SEBI)thanks & regards..& yes thanks in advance..RAJ
Hi kisna, Thanx for the info. I would like to pursue my career in the M&A field. Can u pls let me know are there any current job openings?
Hi Kisna, i've just cleared my C.A final n wish to pursue career in IB. As a start up exercise, i m planning to pursue PG Diploma in Investment Banking which is a distant learning course of 9 months offered by ICFAI university. Kindly share your view in this regard. Manish Goyal
yes its a good course you can do that one. it will give you good knowlege and icfai university provides very good books for all the courses go ahead manish. and if possible try for some MBA in capital markets at NM's college if you have any interest it will take you very ahead
as far as job openings r concerned even i m unware of them cause i jus a CA student. bt to start with u can join some investment banking boutiques and after some months experinec join the biggies like morgan srtanley and meril lynch icici sec or yes bank edlweiss cap citibank religare ect ok. brush up ur corporate finance basics for the interview
hey when u r already a CA why the hell do u need an extra course frm ICFAI. i work as an article in mergers and acquisitions firm wen my frinds r in audit and tax . bt wen i will qualify i be prefered over my frineds. to make a career in IB u should be aware of the latest M & A deals and their analysis and also thetax and lgal aspects. i would suggest u to read PANDYAN book on mergers and acqwuisition. u can also do an MBA after some years where u can get a good stint in big IBs
But yaar how to get into IB?Hardly any co. opens its positions for Freshers......pl advise
ur stint in IB will depend on your CA final course. Didnt u go for campus placements where citibank and icici had come. if u could nt make it in the campus apply to small investment bank firms like ambit finance, YEs bank, CLSA, grant thorton. you can also join as an analyst and grow up. read abt taxation of mergers and acquisitions. www.mergersindia.com is a good site to have access to magazine called M&A critique which contains latest updates of the M&A world. Call up IBs and keep continous follow up. one day u wil get a call for the inteview and u prove ur skills there.
I want to know the scope of a CA in Investment Banking and what additional qualifications are required.
If Anyone has a word or PPT file containing everything abt IB,Please forward it to dd_devesh @ rediffmail.com.
