The Prayagraj Mahakumbh 2025, one of the world's largest religious gatherings, not only witnessed an influx of 66 crore pilgrims over its 45-day duration but also delivered a substantial economic boost to the state of Uttar Pradesh. According to official data, the mega spiritual event helped the state government earn nearly Rs 500 crore in additional revenue through GST and VAT collections.
The tax windfall was fueled by significant increases in activity across sectors such as railways, airlines, hospitality, advertising, civic utilities, and fuel sales. The city of Prayagraj alone contributed Rs 146.4 crore, the highest among all zones in the state.

Sector-Wise Breakdown of Tax Revenues
In January and February 2025, the Uttar Pradesh tax department recorded Rs 239.47 crore in collections from Mahakumbh-related sectors. Key contributors included:
- Railways: Rs 124.6 crore
- Tent houses & advertising: Rs 9.38 crore
- Hotel sector: Rs 7.12 crore
- Prayagraj Nagar Nigam, PWD, and other departments: Significant contributors
Tax receipts from Prayagraj were Rs 76.75 crore in February and Rs 65.81 crore in March, in addition to Rs 2.15 crore collected as TDS (Tax Deducted at Source).
Surge in Fuel Consumption
The Indian Oil Corporation reported an average 36.25% increase in petrol and diesel sales in Prayagraj during January and February 2025, reflecting the spike in travel, transportation, and logistics during the event.
Economic and Social Impact
A senior official from the Uttar Pradesh tax department highlighted that the Mahakumbh's scale translated directly into higher consumption, business activities, and ultimately, enhanced tax revenues. The event served as a powerful demonstration of how spiritual tourism can drive substantial economic gains.
The Mahakumbh's success reaffirms the potential of religious events not only as cultural milestones but also as engines of economic growth, generating employment, boosting local businesses, and strengthening the state exchequer.
