Former State Tax Officer Booked in Disproportionate Assets Case Worth Rs 23 Lakh

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) has registered a case against a former State Tax Officer on charges of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income during his tenure in the GST department.

The accused, Balagopal M.G., was serving as a State Tax Officer at the office of the Additional Commissioner of State Tax Audit, Mattanchery, when the alleged irregularities took place. The case was registered by the VACB special cell, Ernakulam, following a preliminary investigation based on specific intelligence inputs received by the agency.

Assets Worth Rs 76 Lakh Under Scanner

According to the VACB, Balagopal allegedly acquired assets worth Rs 76,03,627 during his service period. Preliminary findings revealed that Rs 23,46,652 worth of assets were disproportionate to his known sources of income, prompting the registration of a formal case under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption laws.

Raids Conducted at Multiple Properties

As part of the investigation, VACB officials conducted searches at the accused officer’s residences located at Marine Drive and Edappally on Wednesday (January 21, 2026). During the raids, officials seized documents and materials believed to be linked to the alleged accumulation of disproportionate assets.

Investigation Ongoing

The Superintendent of Police, VACB special cell, confirmed that further investigation is underway to verify financial records, property documents, and income details to determine the exact extent of the alleged misconduct.

Officials indicated that additional action would depend on the outcome of the detailed financial analysis and corroborative evidence collected during the searches.
