In a business takeover transaction, the surplus amount paid by the acquiring company is shown as Goodwill. Is depreciation allowed on the same?

Hey........ Amortization is allowed on the same..........
What is the time period over which the same can be amortised? Also, the same is allowed under which section / rule / accounting standrd.
