The client of mine having data in Tally wants to export the data to MS SQL. The default tally ODBC option has not been very successful. Any suggestions or support?

Yes. There is an utility which is used by couple of my clients for importing data from Tally into SQL database.
It also enables pulling out data from Excel and Access.
I was told it is good and helped them generate key MIS reports, where even with user defined fields.
