I have received a PTRC Show Cause Notice dated 24 March 2026 stating the following:
- Professional Tax returns have not been filed up to January 2026
- Pending returns along with applicable tax, interest, and penalty need to be filed/paid
- A response is required within the prescribed time
However, my PTRC registration was cancelled in 2016, and I do have the cancellation order on record. Further, the entity is a partnership firm, and accordingly, PTEC is not applicable.
In this context, I seek guidance on the following:
- What could be the reason for receiving such a notice despite cancellation?
- Could this be a system or record mismatch at the department’s end?
- Am I still required to file any returns or make payments for the period post-cancellation?
- Is it sufficient to reply to the notice by attaching the cancellation order and explaining the position?
Would appreciate any guidance from members who have handled similar cases under Maharashtra Profession Tax.
