LIKING AND FRIENDSHIP

Interpersonal attraction refers to

Positive feelings toward another.

Key factors in attraction
(i.e) Factors that promote the development of liking and friendship.

Proximity Effects

It would be difficult for you to develop a friendship with someone you never met.
It happens occasionally for instance among pen pals or users of online
computer services.

but attraction usually depends on people being in the same place at the same time,
making proximity a major factor in attraction.

Proximity refers to

Geographic, residential, and other forms of spatial closeness.
(Classroom seating, office arrangements, and so forth)

Generally,

People become acquainted with, and attracted to, people who live, work , shop,
and play nearby.

The closer people's doors were, the more likely they were to bcame friends.

Physical Effects

In the realm of romance, being physically attractive appears to be more important
for females than males.

This gender gap was apparent in a recent study of the tactics people use
in pursuing romantic relationships.

Similarities and differences between the s*xes in tactics of attraction
(Buss asked newlywed subjects to rate how often they had used 23 tactics of attraction
to make themselves more appealing to their partner.

The matching hypothesis proposes that males and females of approximately equal
physical attractiveness are likely to select each other as partners.

Similarity Effects

Similarity causes attraction.
Similarity cause liking.

Liking is influenced by both similarity and dissimilarity in attitudes.

Reciprocity Effects

Reciprocity involves liking those who show that they like you.

Ingratiation is

a conscious effort to cultivate others liking by complimenting them, agreeing with them,
and doing them favors.

Note :

Studies of proximity, physical attractiveness, similarity and reciprocity shed
some light on the formation and evolution of friendships and romantic relationship.

According to the matching hypothesis, males and females who are similar in
physical attractiveness are likely to be drawm together.

This type of matching may also influence the formation of friendship.
