If an assessee is taking LTA and takes along his family but the journey performed by him and his family is on different dates then as per provisions of Sec.10(5) this contravene the provision and such fare amount of his family would be taxable but however if they return on the same date will it( the return fare) be exempted U/S 10(5). I think that such amount would be exempted.is it right?

The intention behind extending the benefit of LTA is that the employee performs the journey along with the family members while he is on leave. Now, If the family members has left for forward journey at a different than that of the employee, the exemption [both for forward and return journey] will be available provided the employee is on leave on and after the date the famili members left for forward journey.
