HOW TO ADD BANK ACCOUNT FOR A NON RESIDENT

Tax queries 830 views 13 replies

Hello there,

I am asking for a relative who happens to be a non resident and has recently registered on the income tax portal for filing their Income Tax Return for AY 2025 -2026. After logging in , and navigating to the Add bank account option, and entering all the necessary details such as account number, type of account, IFSC code etc and for the purpose of everifying, chooses the option of net banking and after being logged in to net banking and clicked the option of income tax efiling and clicking confirm to the PAN and other personal details, the web page is being redirected to " Access Denied " on the Income Tax Portal. The bank employee has confirmed that the Bank account and PAN has been linked. The person being an NRI does not have an aadhaar card number and does not have a DSC or demat account. A grievance has also been posted via ITR portal. The person is Stuck and has no idea what to do. The bank is South Indian Bank.

I would kindly request anybody who has any idea on how to proceed further to please reply to my post. Thank you.

You should repost your query with "NRI without Aadhaar Card unable to log in to ITR Filing Portal, what is the solution?"

Sir

My relative can log in to ITR portal but isn't able to add a bank account because there is no suitable option for receiving an otp other than net banking which isn't working too. Thank you for responding.

The OTP for the addition of bank account to I-T Portal would come NOT to the mobile number linked TO I-T Portal BUT TO MOBILE LINKED TO THE BANK ACCOUNT.

So check with the bank why OTP not coming.

Sir, My problem results in the query where when a non resident is not necessarily required to have an aadhaar card and does not have one, how is this person supposed to add a bank account in the itr portal, if after entering the details of bank account, for the purpose of e verifying has options of aadhar( dont have), net banking(not working, access is denied is showing), dsc(do not have), demat(do not have).

Thank you for responding.

From this year, e-verification using one's validated bank account had stopped working.

Which many of us came to understand after multiple e-verification failure. This is sneaky, since the e-verification menu still mentions verification using NetBanking which was working perfectly last year.

Most of individual filers do not have digital certificate for e-verification.

And I do not know whether any other methods in the e-verification menu are working except with Aadhaar selection which is working as I had to verify after one of my relatives could not e-verify for almost a week. Finally only Aadhaar selection worked and OTP came from I-T Dept, not from UIDAI.

So I am at a loss on how to help with your problem.

Perhaps this needs direct intervention of the FM as many NRIs must be facing same problem.

If you have twitter, highlight this serious problem to the FM through Twitter. Emailing does not work, I understand.

I was facing a similar issue, not an NRI issue, but was unable to add bank accounts.

After clicking on My Profile>Click on “My Bank Account” >The "Vaidate" button that used to be there before has been replaced with "Proceed to everify". "Proceed to everify" relies on OTP sent to number registered in Aadhaar. I have an Aadhaar but no mobile number registered with Aadhaar & had no bank accounts added in the profile section.

I downloaded the ITR1 excel utility, filled in all the details and did the offline upload of the ITR & submitted the ITR.. I was prepared to mail the ITR V to CPC Bengaluru.

I checked after a few hours & to my surprise the 2 bank accounts that were mentioned in the ITR1 were added to the Profile section. One bank account was validated & the other was "in progress". I used the validated bank account to generate the EVC & completed the verification.

To summarize, if you have trouble adding bank accounts to your profile, do a offline filing of your income tax using the excel utility & the bank accounts mentioned in the ITR will be added & validated.

I hope someone in a similar situation might find this info useful.

Hello Sir

The steps are as follows:

  1. Go to the home page of ITR portal and click on the Downloads section where the offline utility for each ITR forms will be available.
  2. Click on the respective ITR form applicable to you and download the utility folder in your desktop and extract the Excel utility.
  3. Enter all the respective details  in the downloaded utility.
  4. When the bank account section comes, manually enter the details of the bank account number , IFSC code etc
  5. After filling in all the necessary details, calculating tax and validation is completed.
  6. Generate and save the JSON file in your desktop.
  7. Login to your portal and under the option of filing your tax return choose offline mode and respective ITR form and click on upload JSON file.
  8. Submit your ITR return and for OTP, bank account option will be present in the list.
  9. Click on that, and click on continue , EVC code will be generated which we will be send to the bank account linked mobile number and email id.
  10. Upon entering the EVC code, the OTP verification would be completed and ITR can be filed.

Please do note that for this option to work, the email id and mobile number given in the bank account should match with that of the contact details in ITR portal which is clearly mentioned in the Instructions box below the Add Bank Account Option.

Thanks for your detailed response - your help much appreciated.
