  • Don’t memorize GST — structure it into 5 core areas

  • Learn through practical questions, not theory

  • Use cheat sheets + reverse learning

  • Success in GST = clarity + application, not memory

In practical terms, no professional “remembers” all GST sections and rules—and you don’t need to. Even after years of experience, most of us rely on regular reference and updates rather than rote learning.

What really matters is concept clarity and practical exposure.

Start by building a strong base in key areas like:
• Registration & compliance framework
• Time, place, and value of supply
• Input Tax Credit (ITC)
• Returns & due dates
• Invoicing and documentation

Once your fundamentals are clear, begin handling real filings (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, reconciliations). Practical work will automatically help you remember applicable provisions much better than theory.

Also, make it a habit to:
• Refer to bare acts and updated notifications regularly
• Maintain short notes or checklists for quick revision
• Stay updated with amendments (GST is dynamic)

Clients don’t expect you to quote sections—they expect accurate compliance and practical solutions. Focus on that, and confidence will follow.

For structured understanding of GST compliance and practical business applications, you can also explore resources from Setindiabiz.

Don't memorize — structure. GST has ~174 sections but 90% of real work touches ~20. Anchor your study around: (1) Charging & Supply — Sec 7 read with Schedules I-III of CGST Act; (2) Time & Place of Supply — Sec 12-14 CGST + Sec 10-13 IGST (which decide CGST/SGST vs IGST); (3) Input Tax Credit — Sec 16 (conditions), Sec 17(5) (blocked credits — learn this cold, it's a favourite exam Q), Sec 18 (special circumstances); (4) Registration — Sec 22-25; (5) Returns & Payment — Sec 37, 39, 49. Memorize thresholds and blocked credit list, understand the rest. Do 5 past ICAI practical Qs/day — application sticks better than reading.

Also fwiw, I've been using catargettestprep.com for exactly this. Free AI tutor for Paper 3, grades written answers and cites section numbers. Limited to 100 early students, ships new content daily. Worth trying if you're doing self-study for May attempt.
