The fundamental difference between GSTR-2A and GSTR-2B lies in their nature: GSTR-2A is a dynamic, real-time statement, while GSTR-2B is a static, monthly statement.

Key Differences at a Glance

Feature GSTR-2A GSTR-2B
Nature Dynamic: Updates continuously as suppliers upload invoices. Static: A fixed snapshot generated once a month.
Primary Use Monitoring, tracking, and reconciliation. Finalizing and claiming Input Tax Credit (ITC).
Generation Real-time. Auto-generated on the 14th of the following month.
ITC Clarity Does not categorize eligible/ineligible ITC. Clearly bifurcates eligible and ineligible ITC.
Data Basis All filings (including late filings). Filed by the cut-off date (13th of the month).

Understanding the Key Distinctions

  • Dynamic vs. Static: GSTR-2A acts like a live feed of your purchase data. If a supplier uploads an invoice, it reflects in your 2A immediately. GSTR-2B is "frozen" on the 14th of every month. It captures all data filed by your suppliers between the 14th of the previous month and the 13th of the current month.

  • The "Base" for ITC: You should use GSTR-2B as the primary base for claiming your Input Tax Credit (ITC) in your GSTR-3B filing. Because it is static and categorized, it provides the certainty required by the tax department to avoid mismatches and notices.

  • Why your 2A might show more than 2B: If you notice that your GSTR-2A shows a higher amount than your GSTR-2B, it is likely because some suppliers uploaded their invoices after the 13th. Those invoices will not appear in the current month's GSTR-2B, but they will be captured in the following month's GSTR-2B.

Summary

Use GSTR-2A throughout the month to monitor your suppliers' compliance and reconcile your books. However, rely strictly on GSTR-2B when you are ready to file your GSTR-3B, as it represents the official, static record of your eligible ITC for that tax period.
