Claiming medical reimbursement for a partially employed year

Tax queries 536 views 2 replies

Hi,

I was employed for only 2.5 months in the last financial year (FY 2013-14). My company allowed me to submit medical bills for Rs 3,000, which I did. Can I claim additional Rs 12,000 as tax deduction when I file returns this year? Can someone help me out on this one?

Some more information:

  1. My offer letter stated that I can claim upto Rs 15,000/year for medical expenses.
  2. My last payslip did mention I got Rs 3000 as medical expenses reimbursement.

Hi,

No Dear, you cannot. I assume that in the entire financial year your medical expenses reimbursement which is part of your salary earned is only Rs.3,000, if so, you cannot claim.  You should earn first and then claim. If rest of the months of the financial year after you left your organisation and you did not earned medical exp reimbursement component, you cannot claim balance Rs.12,000.

Exemption is available to the extent exp reimbursed towards medical exp incurred by the employee. Since you have received the reimbursement of Rs.3,000/- only hence you may claim only Rs.3000 as exemption.
