You can buy residential plot & construct house thereon. sec 54F.

You can purchase 54EC specified bond. 

Thanks Mr. Mangesh! So you say that one cannot invest half in residential land and half in agricultural land??

you can invest in plot but you should do construction on dat plot to enjoy exemption  on amt of plot + construction and you will not get any exemption if you buy agricultral land

i will sggest you to buy new residential property, u can clain exemption u/s 54

or invest money in  NHAI or RECL bonds upto 50 lakhs u/s 54EC. and that money you hav invested can be received back only after 3 years

Investment in agri. land will not be useful for saving taxes. Cap limit for 54EC is 50 lacs p.a. but you can make investment upto 1 crore by managing your date of sale. Better to invest in residential property.
