MUMBAI: A 32-year-old chartered account allegedly killed herself and her two children on her wedding anniversary on Tuesday, shocking relatives and neighbours at the Malad society where she lived.

Tuesday was supposed to be special for Nidhi Gupta and her husband Pawan Gupta, 35, but the day went horribly wrong when Nidhi, while leaving home to take her daughter Mahika, 3, to school, instead took both Mahika and her son, Gaurav , 6, to the 19floor of their building.

From there, she allegedly pushed Mahika and Gaurav off the balcony-type refuge room before leaping to her own death. The three died of multiple injuries.

Nidhi, a chartered accountant and college guest lecturer, left a brief note in English which the Dindoshi police later recovered from the Guptas' residence on the 9floor. She wrote that nobody should be held responsible for her actions. Officials said the Guptas were plunged into grief and their statements would be recorded only on Wednesday. The police said they haven't ruled out any motive as yet.

Nidhi and Pawan had married around a decade ago. Pawan assists his father and brother in the family's readymade garments export business. They run a factory in Silvassa and another at Cama Estate in Goregaon.
'Husband was asleep at time of incident'

Mumbai : For the past two years , 10 members of the Gupta family , including Pawan and Nidhi Gupta , have been living in a 3-BHK flat in Sahyadri Society , Upper Govind Nagar , Malad (East ). The others living there are Pawan's parents , his brother , sister-in-law Sunita and the latter's kids. Before that , the entire family stayed in Haji Ali.

The shocking events began unfolding on Tuesday morning after Nidhi finished having tea with Sunita . A little after 8.20 am, she left the house with Mahika and Gaurav to take the kindergartener Mahika to her school bus. "When I spotted the three of them on the ninth floor , I explained that the elevator was headed upstairs and they would have to wait for some more time to go to the ground floor ," said liftman Sunil . "But Nidhi told me that she wanted to go upstairs that morning. She pressed a button for the 18th floor and got off with her children there." According to the police, Nidhi and the children then climbed a flight of stairs and went to the 19 th floor.

There they entered a balcony-type refuge room where Nidhi placed Mahika's schoolbag , tiffin , water bottle and milk bottle on the ground . By 8.30 am, when the liftman returned to the ground floor , residents of the building heard a thud and found Gaurav lying in a pool of blood in the compound . Soon , Mahika fell, followed by Nidhi. The woman hit a spiked fence that separated the compound from a grassy patch and fell on the grass.

Residents informed Sunita , who was taking her morning walk downstairs . Nidhi and the children were rushed to the Sanjeevani Hospital , Malad , where they were declared dead . The bodies were taken to the Borivali post-mortem centre.

Pawan and his brother were asleep at home when the incident occurred , Pawan's sister-in-law told the media .
"Nidhi last spoke to her parents, who live in Worli , on Monday . We will be making inquiries with them soon ," said senior inspector V Kakade . The Dindoshi police have registered a case of murder against Nidhi and an accidental death case in connection with the suicide. They said marital discord had not been ruled out.
