Amount Received by mother from son living in abroad is the amount taxable in India?

If any mother received some amount of money from her son living in abroad by IMPS-Western Union Finance. Is it taxable in India in the hand of the mother?

Thanks & Regards

Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies whether money received by a mother in India from her son living abroad is taxable. The consensus is that such remittances are generally not taxable in the mother's hands, as gifts from relatives are typically exempt from Indian income tax. The tax liability, if any, would likely have been handled by the son in the country where he resides or earns the income.

No. It is not taxable.

I think NO.

Gift received from relative is always not chargeable to Tax.

Hi Davender,

Good news for you!

The amount so received by the mother would in no case be taxable in her hands, as it is received from her son!

Probably, her son would have paid the required taxes on this transferred income abroad or in India as the case may be (depending upon his residential status).

This would thus be free from any tax liability in India in the hands of mother.
