Insurance Companies Face Rs 20,000 Crore GST Liability for Rule Violations: DGGI

Last updated: 02 October 2024

The DGGI has uncovered significant GST violations by insurance companies, revealing that many have failed to pay GST on services provided to employees in Special Economic Zone (SEZ) units. According to Anil Kumar Gupta, Principal DG of DGGI, these services are not exempt from GST, and companies failing to comply are in violation of GST rules.

Gupta clarified that while some insurance firms have adhered to GST laws in certain cases, others have neglected their obligations. The result is a collective GST liability of approximately Rs 20,000 crore for the general insurance sector.

Following detailed investigations, the DGGI has issued notices to the non-compliant companies. Gupta also pointed out that this issue is not addressed in the recent clarifications for the insurance sector issued during the 53rd GST Council meeting.

As insurance companies work to rectify their compliance issues, they could face significant penalties, underscoring the importance of adhering to GST regulations in services related to SEZ employees.
