Gross GST Revenue Jumps 16.4% in May 2025, Hits Rs 2.01 Lakh Crore Mark

India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections surged to Rs 2,01,050 crore in May 2025, marking a robust 16.4% year-on-year growth from Rs 1,72,739 crore in May 2024, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Finance.

This strong performance was driven by a notable increase in both domestic transactions and imports. Domestic GST revenue (CGST, SGST, IGST & Cess) stood at Rs 1,49,785 crore in May 2025, compared to Rs 1,31,783 crore in the same month last year, registering a 13.7% rise. Import-based GST revenue grew even more sharply at 25.2%, climbing from Rs 40,956 crore in May 2024 to Rs 51,266 crore in May 2025.

Net GST Revenue Up 20.4%

After adjusting for refunds, the net GST revenue for May 2025 amounted to Rs 1,73,841 crore-a significant 20.4% increase over Rs 1,44,381 crore collected in May 2024. While domestic refunds rose sharply by 53.7%, export refunds through ICEGATE fell by 45.9%, contributing to the rise in net revenue.

State-Wise Performance

Several states and Union Territories posted impressive growth figures in their GST collections:

  • Delhi: Up 38% (Rs 10,366 crore vs Rs 7,512 crore)
  • Tamil Nadu: Up 25% (Rs 12,230 crore vs Rs 9,768 crore)
  • Karnataka: Up 20% (Rs 14,299 crore vs Rs 11,889 crore)
  • Maharashtra: Continues to lead with Rs 31,530 crore, growing 17%
  • Uttar Pradesh: Almost flat at Rs 9,130 crore (0% growth)

Smaller regions like Lakshadweep (445%), Manipur (102%), and Arunachal Pradesh (53%) showed exponential percentage increases, though from a low base.

On the other hand, Uttarakhand (-13%), Mizoram (-26%), and Andhra Pradesh (-2%) reported declines in their GST collections.

Settlements to States

The post-settlement SGST revenues, which include the SGST portion of IGST settled to states, showed marginal declines in several major states like Uttar Pradesh (-6%), Odisha (-16%), and Tamil Nadu (-6%). The overall post-settlement revenue to states/UTs marginally declined by 1%-from Rs 1,68,137 crore in 2024-25 (till May) to Rs 1,67,025 crore in 2025-26 (till May).

Sector-Wise Breakup

  • CGST: Rs 35,434 crore (↑ from Rs 32,409 crore)
  • SGST: Rs 43,902 crore (↑ from Rs 40,265 crore)
  • IGST: Rs 1,08,836 crore (↑ from Rs 87,781 crore)
  • Cess: Rs 12,879 crore (↑ from Rs 12,284 crore)

GSTIN Growth Reflects Economic Expansion

The total number of active GST registrations (GSTINs) reached over 88.6 lakh by May 31, 2025, up from 63.5 lakh a year ago. This rise in registrations has positively impacted the tax base and reflects increased formalization of the Indian economy.

May 2025 has proven to be a strong month for GST collections, showcasing the resilience and continued expansion of India's indirect tax ecosystem. As compliance improves and enforcement tightens, the government's tax revenues are likely to remain on an upward trajectory throughout the fiscal year.
