CBIC Warns Taxpayers Against Fake GST Notices, Urges DIN Verification

Last updated: 13 January 2026

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) on January 9, 2026, issued a strong caution to businesses and taxpayers after detecting a surge in fake GST notices and summons being circulated by fraudsters.

The warning came in response to a complaint raised by a taxpayer on social media platform X, who reported receiving a phone call from an individual claiming to be a GST officer. Addressing the concern publicly, the CBIC clarified that scammers are impersonating GST officials and sending forged communications to unsuspecting businesses.

CBIC Warns Taxpayers Against Fake GST Notices, Urges DIN Verification

Fake GST Summons Mimics Official Documents

According to the CBIC, fraudsters are creating fake GST summons and notices that closely resemble official documents. These communications often carry the CGST logo, official-looking formats and even fabricated Document Identification Numbers (DINs) to appear authentic.

The tax authority warned that such fraudulent notices are being used to intimidate taxpayers into sharing sensitive information or making unauthorised payments.

CBIC Advises Mandatory DIN Verification

To counter the growing threat, the CBIC has urged taxpayers to verify the DIN mentioned on any GST communication. Every genuine notice, summons or letter issued by the tax department carries a unique DIN, which can be verified on the CBIC's official portal.

"If the communication is genuine, the DIN verification will confirm it. If not, taxpayers should report it immediately," the CBIC stated.

What Taxpayers Should Do

The CBIC advised businesses and professionals to remain vigilant and follow these steps:

  • Do not respond to suspicious calls, emails, or messages claiming to be from GST authorities.
  • Verify the DIN on the CBIC portal before taking any action.
  • Report fake notices or calls immediately to the tax department.
  • Avoid sharing PAN, GSTIN, OTPs, or financial details with unknown callers.

Rising GST Fraud Cases a Cause for Concern

Tax experts note that with increased digitisation of tax administration, GST-related frauds and impersonation attempts have also risen. The CBIC's advisory aims to protect taxpayers from falling prey to such scams and reinforce trust in official communication channels.

Taxpayers are advised to rely only on official GST portals and authorised communications and stay alert to prevent financial and compliance risks.
