The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued a crucial warning to taxpayers across India about a widening scam involving fake GST violation notices. In an official alert dated July 21, 2025, the CBIC highlighted how fraudsters are misusing the system by sending fabricated documents that mimic government communications to trick people into responding to bogus GST claims.
According to the CBIC, these fraudulent notices often appear convincing, using official-looking formats, forged CGST logos, and fake Document Identification Numbers (DINs). The documents are carefully structured to resemble legitimate GST summons or violation notices, increasing the risk of taxpayers falling prey to the scam.

How to Identify Fake GST Notices
The CBIC has outlined the following red flags that can help taxpayers identify these fake communications:
- Forged summons that closely imitate authentic government documents.
- Fraudulent use of the CGST logo and departmental seals.
- Fake Document Identification Numbers (DINs), which are critical in validating government-issued documents.
- Use of formal and misleading language intended to pressure recipients into quick action.
What Taxpayers Should Do
To avoid falling victim, the CBIC strongly urges all taxpayers to verify the DIN of any notice or communication they receive. The DIN can be easily verified on the official CBIC portal at www.cbic.gov.in.
In case of any suspicion or doubts, citizens are encouraged to:
- Call the Cyber Helpline at 1030.
- Lodge a complaint via the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal: www.cybercrime.gov.in.
CBIC's Message: Stay Alert, Stay Safe
CBIC emphasized the need for increased vigilance among taxpayers to prevent falling victim to cyber fraud and financial scams. As digital fraud becomes more sophisticated, verifying the authenticity of government communication is more important than ever.
Taxpayers are reminded that all genuine notices and communications from tax authorities will have a valid DIN, which must be matched with the records on CBIC's official site before taking any further action.
