CBIC Orders Price Monitoring to Ensure GST Cut Benefits Consumers

Last updated: 25 September 2025

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has instructed its field officials across India to closely monitor whether dealers and retailers are passing on the benefits of the new GST rate cuts effective September 22, 2025.

Officials have been asked to collect brand-wise price details of goods such as food items, toiletries, stationery, medicines, toys and consumer durables, both before and after the revised GST rates. The data will include brand names, product sizes or weights, and copies of receipts with maximum retail price (MRP) and tax breakup. The exercise must be completed by September 28, with reports submitted to designated regional email IDs.

While manufacturers of FMCG goods and medicines have been given until December to update labels with revised MRPs, receipts at retail outlets are expected to immediately reflect the new GST rates.

In addition to physical stores, officials will monitor popular e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart to ensure that online buyers also benefit from the tax reductions. A senior official stated, "While major companies have assured compliance, this initiative ensures that the GST benefits are not absorbed in the supply chain but are passed on fully to the end consumer."

The CBIC had earlier, through a September 9 circular, directed officials to submit monthly reports tracking prices of around 54 commodities. This exercise will continue for at least six months.

Expected Consumer Impact

Experts believe the GST rate rationalisation will significantly reduce household expenses. For instance, a family with a monthly income of Rs 50,000 and an average spend of Rs 25,000 on essentials could save approximately Rs 1,275 per month on food, personal care and medical bills.

The move is expected to boost savings, increase purchasing power and fuel India's consumption-driven growth story.
