Taxpayers have received last-minute relief as the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has further extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26.
The ITR filing deadline, which was initially set for July 31, 2025, had already been extended once to September 15, 2025. Now, in a fresh notification, CBDT has announced that the due date stands extended to September 16, 2025.
The extension comes amid heavy online traffic on the Income Tax e-filing portal, with many taxpayers and professionals reporting slowdowns while uploading returns. To facilitate the required changes in utilities and ensure smoother functioning, the portal will remain under scheduled maintenance from 12:00 AM to 2:30 AM on September 16, 2025.

The extension provides a one-day breather for individual taxpayers (non-audit cases) and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who were facing the midnight rush. However, experts advise taxpayers not to wait until the last moment, as delays may still cause difficulties in submission due to high server load.
