The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the specified date for furnishing various reports of audit under the Income-tax Act, 1961, for Assessment Year 2025-26. The deadline, which was earlier set at September 30, 2025, has now been extended to October 31, 2025.

The extension comes in response to numerous representations from professional associations, including Chartered Accountant bodies, who highlighted the challenges faced by taxpayers and practitioners in timely completion of audit reports. Factors such as disruptions caused by floods, natural calamities and their impact on business and professional activity were cited as major concerns.

CBDT also acknowledged that the matter had been raised before various High Courts. While clarifying that the Income-tax e-filing portal has been operating smoothly without technical glitches, the Board noted that substantial progress has already been made. As of September 24, 2025, over 4.02 lakh Tax Audit Reports (TARs), including 60,000 TARs uploaded on the same day, were filed successfully. In addition, more than 7.57 crore income tax returns (ITRs) had been filed by September 23, 2025.
However, keeping in mind the difficulties faced by taxpayers and submissions before the courts, the government decided to extend the deadline by one month. A formal order/notification to this effect will be issued separately.
The extension provides much-needed relief to tax practitioners and businesses, ensuring adequate time for accurate compliance under the Income Tax Act.
