CBDT Extends ITR Filing Due Date from 31st July to 15th September for AY 2025-26

Last updated: 27 May 2025

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension of the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. The new deadline for filing returns that were originally due by July 31, 2025, has now been extended to September 15, 2025.

The decision comes in light of major structural and content changes introduced in the notified ITR forms for AY 2025-26. The revisions aim to simplify compliance, improve transparency, and ensure more accurate tax reporting. However, these updates have also necessitated additional time for the development, integration and testing of the corresponding utilities.

Additionally, credits arising from Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) statements due by May 31, 2025 are expected to reflect in early June, limiting the effective window for filing returns if the original due date had remained unchanged.

CBDT noted that the extension was made after considering feedback from stakeholders and to ensure a smoother and more convenient filing experience.

This move is expected to ease the compliance burden and give taxpayers sufficient time to adjust to the new ITR format, ultimately enhancing the accuracy and integrity of the tax filing process.

Key Highlights

  • New ITR due date: September 15, 2025 (extended from July 31, 2025)
  • Reason for extension: System readiness and utility rollout for revised ITR forms
  • Impact: Allows taxpayers more time to report accurately and align with updated TDS credits

This extension by CBDT reinforces the government's commitment to a taxpayer-friendly and transparent tax regime.
