In a major step towards strengthening institutional cooperation and enhancing operational effectiveness, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
The MoU, signed by CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal and A M Bajaj, Deputy CAG, in the presence of CAG K Sanjay Murthy, aims to promote academic, training, and research collaboration in areas of mutual interest.

Strategic Capacity-Building Framework
Highlighting the importance of the agreement, CAG Murthy stated that the MoU will act as a strategic framework for professional cooperation, particularly in data-driven technologies. The partnership will help bridge skill gaps, strengthen governance and drive innovation in auditing and tax administration.
The collaboration will include:
- Training workshops and joint seminars for officers of both organisations.
- Sharing audit insights through advanced data analytics.
- Exploring innovative methods like remote audits in GST audits and other tax-related areas.
- Supporting system improvements identified by the CBDT, using expertise from CAG officials trained in AI and machine learning.
Enhancing Transparency and Tax Administration
Murthy expressed confidence that the partnership will promote transparency, enhance operational efficiency, and influence regulatory changes based on audit findings.
CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal added that the training infrastructure and expertise within the audit department would greatly benefit tax officials in improving their knowledge base and effectiveness in tax administration.
With both institutions sharing aligned goals, the MoU is expected to boost financial governance, strengthen oversight mechanisms, and support the adoption of emerging technologies in India's auditing and tax ecosystem.
