56th GST Council Meet Approves 3-Day Automated Registration for Small Businesses

The 56th meeting of the GST Council was held in New Delhi under the chairpersonship of the Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman. The GST Council inter-alia made the recommendations relating to changes in GST tax rates, provide relief to individuals, common man, aspirational middle class and measures for facilitation of trade in GST.

In a major relief for small businesses and first-time taxpayers, the GST Council has recommended the launch of an optional simplified GST registration scheme, designed to ease entry into the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework.

Key Features of the Scheme

  • Automated Approval: GST registration will be granted within three working days from the date of application submission for low-risk applicants.
  • Eligibility Threshold: The scheme is open to applicants who, based on self-assessment, expect their monthly output tax liability on supplies to registered persons to be within ₹2.5 lakh (inclusive of CGST, SGST/UTGST, and IGST).
  • Voluntary Opt-In/Out: Applicants can choose to voluntarily opt into the scheme and also withdraw from it if their business circumstances change.
  • Implementation Timeline: The new scheme will be operational from 1st November 2025.

Who Will Benefit?

According to government estimates, around 96% of new GST applicants are likely to fall under the eligibility criteria. This means the vast majority of startups, small traders, and service providers will benefit from a hassle-free, faster, and less intrusive registration process.
