Wrong pan number mentioned while filing returns

I had filed the Tax for the assessment year 2008-09. However recently I recieved a letter from income tax dept asking to pay the outstanding tax. However when I contacted assessing officer, we pointed that the PAN details were wrong (Last letter 'L' was missing from 10 digit PAN number) and asked me to contact HDFC bank (tax was paid at HDFC collection centre). On contacting bank they mentioned that they retain only 6 months old documents and send the older ones to Mumbai. I would like to know what if bank fails to rectify the PAN number. Also will I have to pay any interest?

chase the bank branch and make it corrected with nmsdl data, otherwise your tax paid will get lapsed and fresh tax with interest is payable

Thanks for replying. By the way after how many years does the tax paid gets lapsed?

if the assessement is completed before your correcetion, then it will be lapsed.......
