What is the meaning of Ordinance

Any enactment needs to be passed by both house of the parliament and assented to by the President. However, when the parliament is not in session, and some enactment is urgent and necessary, same is effected by issuance of an ordinance. The ordinance needs to be passed by both houses of the parliament within a period of six months, else it lapses on expiary of six months.
