Much to the delight of hostellers, foreigners and even housewives, the western concept of community washing machines is making waves in New Delhi. It's probably the first-of-its kind facility in the city where people can walk in with dirty laundry, pay and use a coin-operated washing machine to wash and dry six kilogram clothes. All it takes is an hour of waiting which people often utilize by shopping, taking a stroll or even dating amid the aroma of detergent and good music.
Lauched
by a Chartered Accountant, 24-year-old Anshul Gupta, in November last year, the laundromat comprising six washing machine imported from the Czech Republicas become a hotspot for locals. Gupta says he gets at least 40 customers every day with the footfall increasing in the winter.The kind of response that we received in the first week was expected to come only in six months," said Gupta.
People have to buy Rs 150 for each load of six kilogram clothes.Anshul provides them the detergent and attendants help them with the machines. Anshul, left his job in New York to experiment with the community washing concept in the city. Anshul says he also particular about the music he plays for customers. He has a collection of Backstreet Boys, Linking Park and Scorpion which has its own effect.
