Shouldn't companies look beyond attempts

Hi all

This is just my look out and has nothing personal to any one on this site or outside it.Just thought to share with my fellow CCI members so i thought to write this

Yesterday during one of the interviews i found out a CA November pass out who was working part time in some CA firm and told me that he is not getting a single job. He was ready to work for even 20 thousand a month since he did not clear in first or 2nd attempt and did not even get shortlisted for campus.He also had financial pressures at home and had to earn something better.

I really felt sorry for him and told him to be patient and keep trying.

However after meeting him i just thought that shouldnt the companies in campus placements look beyond no of attempts. Isnt' it required that companies should at least call all the candidates registered for campus at different centres or arrange at least an online interview before just outright rejecting the application forms based on no of attempts mentioned ??

May  be even CA institute can take certain steps to at least filter the candidates by conducting personal insterviews or tests before sending the database to the companies in order to save time of the companies but at least giving all registered candidates an equal chance of selection

Even i cleared my CA in the last exam and had registered for campus but did not get a single call jus because  of my multiple attempts.Fortunately i had a job before exams where i am continuing post CA( but finding a better profile) so not a big worry for me but only judging of candidates calibre based on no of attempts is inappropriate according to me and should be stopped

Also some companies pay exhorbitant packages to rankers and first attempt candidates but it must be intimated to the recruiters that even multiple attempt students are equally patient and deserve at least some decent package as they also have equally worked hard ..and at least should not be hired for peanuts.I am not sayin that first rankers do not be paid so high packages but i think at least people with multiple attempts also require to be screened and paid appropriately.

Hence its my humble plea to all my CCI mates that we must do something in this regard coz a CA feels so humiliated that even after so much of efforts and hardwork he/she is being paid so low.

Again i repeat myself by saying that it is nothing personal to any one on this site or any comment or post on this site or outside it.These are my personal views and has nothing to do with my on application or otherwise.

Ya your views are absolutely correct......infact i would like to add something.....now a days companies often prefer experienced candidate and that too in exact profile for which vacancy is there.....but my view is a CA if given a chance can do anything in a better way....if he/she has not do that particular work ever it doesn't mean that he is not able to do so.......in articleship it is not possible to have practical exposure in each every aspect.......companies must think about it and chance must be given to CAs...........such a complex problem can be solved by ICAI only by taking some initiative measure in this regard....like fixing minimum remuneration...making CA appointment mandatory for companies.....but unfortunately our institute is not doing anythingelse............sad

Yes i agree parul....even during interviews i found out that the Hr's have a fixed mind set that CA's can only do accounting and finance work and max audit the accounts. In one of the interviews i had a very weired question wherein the interviewer asked me that you were doin CA so why did you go for CS whats going in your mind?? Also he asked me that  you have accounting and finance knowledge as a CA but  why you do not have any exposure to corporate finance and research activities or any transactional /advisory services

They need to understand that every one is not from big4's and there is world beyond big4's and no of attmepts.

Ya even i am very much frustrated with these type of talks........in an interview the profile was of Invoice processing.....and in my CV it was not mentioned so HR manager says you have not done Invoice processing so you are not the right candidate for the same position........such type of discussions even demoralize a person......

hey i wont completely agree with this post because i cleared CA by taking a handful of attempts and now one company from chennai has selected me for interview on coming 16th through campus placement. if this post were true then they would not shortlist me fir the campus interview. Fee friends of mine told so negatively about campus placement but i kept my cool and applied for it. Opportunities are there always under our feet, but we have to recognise it and believe in ourself.

I agree wid u ppl.. its really disappointing tht students are nt getting job even after completing CA .... u cant judge a person by no. of attempts he has tkn to complete CA.. we all know CA Course is nt tht easy.... I guess a fair chance should be given to all in campus !!....

I know a lots of CAs who placed through campus inspite of the attempts they taken for clearing exam. I know lot of CAs who didnt apply to campus at all by saying that compitition will be higher and like that. If after qualifying this is your mentality then please tell me how they will get a chance to prove. Further India is not only the country where CAs have jobs there are other countries like Qatar, UAE, other GCC countries where CAs are in demand.

wat i meant ot convey through this post was not the position of a few handful of people but that of a vast majority.Again i am mentioning that it is nohing personal but it is about the system.The post is not written based on my personal experience of not getting a call from the campus ,inspite of registering for the same or becoz i met someone during my interview who was ready to work for less package but i have written it to discuss the actual scenario of the campus and post CA qualification problems what most of the student face even after a stupendous effort of their own to clear CA  exams.

It is like those who get shortlisted vouch for campus and those who do not crib on that campus is not useful.

But my friend i am just looking for a system in place  wherein everyone has equal chance to get shortlisted for a job and not jus based on no of attempts he/she takes.

yes roshan the scenario is worst. i know it. i never wanted to hurt you. The first reason is ICAI charging too much fee from companies for selection. They could have done the campus with less fee so that more companies can participate in campus. Further they could have created a database of fresh passouts and that will available to companies throughout the year and those who got the job can be eliminated from this list so the next batch get an equal chance.

I really appreciate you for bringing up this topic. Whatever you have said is completely true. Frankly speaking you are not hurting any person by speaking what you feel is right. What you are saying is for the benefit of all the CAs' and future CAs'. The campus interview is waste of time. Even the tier II MBA institutions attract many companies forget about all the IIMs' and other top universities. Someone needs to do something. 

i completely agree with rohan. campus is just for those who cleared in 1st or 2nd attempt max. many of the companies just filter on the basis of no. of attempts as if the quality of other candidates is par below than those 1st attempt holders. all should be given a chance to prove themselves. on top of this icai charges from students as well as companies. and the end result would be either very few out of the mass get recruited. if this is the case, then icai should declare that campus is only for 1st/2nd attempt holders and others are not required to unnecessary pay and register, but better try elsewhere. so that they wouldn't be in the hope of regularly checking their logins for getting shortlistlisted & some company shower luck on them, instead they can try in the outside market.

To add to the discussion I want to add one more thing to it , why a CA Final pass out not opt for the practice as an option.

Yeah I know there might be a draught initially but what about the future benifits and all other added advantages for that matter.

I heartly feel that Practice as a Chartered Accountant in the open market serves us people more benefitis compare to bagging for 30-50k a month and toiling for hours in the office cabin doing all the tailored/procedural stuff without any self respect and integrity  without any personal and professional value enrichment on the other side of it.

Absolutely correct Rohan! Its very immature on the part of recruiters to merely look at the number of attempts and accept or reject applications. Not every 1st attempt student is brilliant at work, nor is very person who exceeds certain number of attempts, not-fit-for the job. The problem is, they treat people as some kind of problem solving, compliance ensuring machines, and not as human beings. The day, they take into account the fact, that all people, who are qualified chartered are HUMAN beings, the problem can be tackled more easily, because HUMANS need not be perfect to achieve, but if motivated, the sky is the limit! 

It is tragic to see that after getting through an important milestone, we have to beg to be treated as humans. It is somewhere down the line, our responsibility as a CA to uphold our respect and protect our honor. No one can treat us well, until we feel that we deserve it!!
