Could anybody tell me about the service tax applicablility on Books/ Mags Publishing.

Suppose

Case-1

I take jobwork of publishing books. I take manuscriptt from customers. I do composition. I get the films made by others and get the printing and binding work done by others. Is it a sale of books or service? If service, how service tax will be applicable.

Case-2

I publish my own magazine. I get money from subscripttion, lifemembership, etc. I don't have any printing machine or binding manchine. I get all things for the magazine done by others. Like I get my magazines printed by some press. I get my books bound from binders. Should I treat money from sale of magazines as money from books sale? I think it is a manufacturing type.

Your transaction is one of selling books and magazines applicable to VAT. In most States the VAT rate for books and peridicals is nil. You may need to confirm that inthe scedulke of VAT in relevant state.

Thanks to Mr. Madhukar for reply.

My query is about applicablity of Service Tax on Jobwork related to books publishing.

Another problem is related to accounting-

Should I treat follwoing as Sale?

a. Sale of Magazines through subscriptttion, lifemembership fee, agency, etc &

b. Jobwork bill

In case of jobwork we draw bills mentioning cost of final product, i.e., paper cost, composing, designing, lamination, printing, binding, etc. for specific number of books.
