This is a known issue with the ITR-5 utility concerning Table F (Representative Assessee details), where the fields get locked (dimmed) and you cannot change the required Yes/No option after initial selection, causing a validation error.

Here are some possible solutions you can try:

  1. Use the latest version of the utility:
Sometimes this issue occurs because the ITR utility version is outdated or has bugs. Download the latest Java or Excel utility from the Income Tax e-filing portal.

  2. Start fresh with a new ITR-5 XML or utility file:
Export your data (if possible), then start a fresh form and carefully select the options correctly from the beginning, especially in Table F. Sometimes the issue happens if you initially selected “No” and then left some fields blank.

  3. Fill the form offline & upload XML:
Use the offline utility to fill the entire return, save the XML, and upload the XML file directly on the e-filing portal. Sometimes direct XML upload bypasses some UI restrictions.

  4. Contact IT Helpdesk with ticket and request manual intervention:
Since you already raised grievances, escalate your issue with detailed screenshots and error message to the Income Tax Department Helpdesk (through e-filing portal > Contact Us > Grievance).

  5. Penalty Relief Request:
Since this issue is portal-related and beyond your control, you may consider submitting a request for waiver of penalty citing technical glitches causing delay in filing.

Important note:

  • Table F is meant for Representative Assessee details, applicable mostly when a guardian or legal representative files on behalf of an assessee.

  • If you’re not a representative assessee, ensure you have selected "No" in all related fields consistently.
