Nuclear Disaster In Japan

After the devastating earthquake in Japan in which 1.700 people died or are missing, an explosion occurred at Fukushima nuclear power plant on Saturday, which led to a leakage of radioactive material, forcing Japanese authorities to evacuate 300,000 people in the areas near two nuclear reactors.

After different media reports on the kind and place of the incident at the Japanese nuclear complex, the government confirmed that there has been an explosion at the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), that radioactive material has leaked, and that four workers have been injured, but that the steel container in which reactor is located was not damaged.

According to news agencies, the level of radiation measured near the plant was 20 times higher than normal.

Although Japanese authorities earlier said that there is little danger of radioactive material leakage, the state television called on the people living near the plant to stay in their homes, close all doors and windows, turn off air conditioners and not to drink tap water, and if they have to go out, to cover their heads and bodies with masks and wet towels.

Three people evacuated from the area near the Fukushima plant were hospitalized after being exposed to radiation, the Japanese Kyodo news agency reported.

The Japanese Defence Ministry said that a special unit of land forces and the Agency for Nuclear Safety are jointly supervising radioactive substances around the two reactors.

The TEPCO plans to fill a leaking reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant with sea water in order to cool it down and reduce pressure in the unit, spokesperson of the Japanese Prime Minister said on Saturday.

The nuclear reactor is located in a steel reactor container, which is then surrounded by a concrete building that collapsed, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said, noting that there was no large amount of radiation leakage.

Edano said it would take 5 to 10 hours to fill the reactor with sea water and some 10 days to complete the whole process, Reuters reported.

The number of Japanese citizens evacuated from the area around the two nuclear reactors has so far reached 300.000, including 210.000 of five Japanese prefecture’s residents.

The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) offered on Saturday technical help to Japan in order for the country to overcome the consequences of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami.

The IAEA confirmed its offer of technical assistance to Japan, should the government request it, the agency said, and Reuters reported.

The IAEA also said that Japanese authorities are making preparations to distribute iodine to residents in the area near the plant.

Situation Worsening In Japan

Second Explosion Fears At Japan Nuclear Plant

A second explosion could take place at a nuclear power plant in quake-hit Japan, amid fears of a meltdown and after the evacuation of 200,000 people.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano warned of a hydrogen blast at the Fukushima plant's reactor three, but insisted it could withstand it as reactor one did on Saturday.

The first explosion destroyed the building housing the reactor, but did not prompt a major radiation leak.

Operators have also been attempting to prevent meltdown of another unit by injecting sea water into it, but problems with reactor three's cooling systems have persisted.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said it was preparing to release some steam to relieve pressure in the reactor at the plant - 150 miles (241km) north of Tokyo.

This plan would release radiation.

Japan battles partial nuclear meltdown

Japanese nuclear experts are working to contain a partial meltdown at an earthquake-stricken nuclear power plant north of Tokyo, as fears grow that the death toll from Friday’s massive quake and tsunami could reach the tens of thousands.

Yukio Edano, Japan’s chief government spokesman, said there was a “significant chance” that radioactive fuel rods had partially melted in two reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility, 240km north of the capital.

We're watching a new Chernobyl

With a confirmed death toll of more than 1000 and at least 10,000 unaccounted for from the biggest earthquake in its recorded history, Japanese authorities were desperately trying to avoid a nuclear meltdown.

But some US nuclear physicists have warned we might be watching another Chernobyl.

Nature's Tragedy.. :(

picture no.4 is not a nuclear reactor .....its an oil factory in japan...  although there was an explosion in the nuclear site but it is unlikely to happen any radiation says nuclear experts.. but their govt is taking all precautions

My Prayers are with Japanese people and all those who have been affected by sunami. Let pray to God that the didtratous nuclear explosion is averted.

Japan nuclear crisis worsens as country braces for second huge earthquake

  •  Scientists predict second massive quake of 7.0
  •  Nuclear crisis as second reactor cooling system fails
  •  PM brands disaster as worst since second world war
  •  Earthquake and tsunami earth toll set to top 10,000

Three days after a devastating earthquake unleashed a tsunami in which at least 10,000 people are feared dead, Japan on Sunday faced a deepening nuclear crisis and the prospect of another quake as powerful as the one that laid waste to vast stretches of its north-eastern coastline.

The prime minister, Naoto Kan, called the disaster "Japan's most severe crisis since the war ended 65 years ago". He called on the country to unite and said its future would be decided by the response to this crisis.

The threat of further seismic shifts and tsunami is far from over. As rescue teams from more than 70 countries and tens of thousands of Japanese troops descended on the disaster zone, meteorological agency officials warned there was a 70% chance of a magnitude-7.0 earthquake striking the region in the next three days.

"There will be many aftershocks in multiple locations. We have to brace ourselves for aftershocks of magnitude 5 or even magnitude 6," an agency official said.

The meteorological agency upgraded last Friday's earthquake, the fifth biggest in the world for a century, from magnitude 8.8 to 9.0. What began as a violent seismic shift lasting minutes has left a permanent geological legacy: the US Geological Survey said the force of the quake had shifted the island a distance of 8ft (2.5 metres).

New images from Japanese TV revealed, one submerged community after the other, the full extent of the devastation, and the determination of a nation united by a natural catastrophe that almost defies comprehension.

Rescue teams and survivors are in constant fear of yet more powerful quakes and tsunami. Millions of others were bracing for a potentially catastrophic nuclear accident after the government warned that a second nuclear reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi (No1) atomic power plant could explode.

I also hope for the same.

God Bless Them All.

As close as it gets to the sum of all fears

THIS is as close as Japan has come to the dreaded genpatsu shinsai scenario - a nuclear emergency breaking out in the chaos following a huge earthquake and destructive tsunamis.

Once the crisis has passed, the questions will arise again and with redoubled force: is Japan's nuclear power industry as secure as it constantly claims, and can any level of precaution make nuclear plants reliably safe in the world's most seismically dangerous nation?

There are 17 nuclear power stations around the country, most on the main island of Honshu, supplying almost 35 per cent of the nation's baseload power. Otherwise, Japan is dependent on shipments of oil and liquefied natural gas for electricity generation.

That's why Tokyo governments and planners remain so attached to nuclear power, despite the accidents and safety failures that afflict Japan's nuclear industry.....................
