Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies the use of 'To' and 'By' in ledger accounting. It explains that 'By' typically represents items coming in (like assets or expenses) and 'To' represents items going out (like incomes or liabilities). Examples are provided to illustrate how to correctly post entries in different books like the cash book and sales book.

It's very simple

By cash a/c

To Sales a/c

In the cash book, since cash is debit in the above journal, put To sales in the debit column.

In the sales book since sales s credit in the above journal, put By cash in the credit column.
