ITR-2 Excel Utility for AY-2025-26, My Update on using it

@ Cs26kit

in my case ( before trying to save the json) I did check the summary and fortunaifir me, there was no mismatch fron the data entered by me.

When I could not save json, I trued to save as X M L using normal excel "save as" ( since there is no button for saving as X M L). I wanted to save to import it into next avatar of the utility.

But even "save as" did not allow saving as X M L.

Then I got fed up and abandoned the exercise.

Do you mean the last sheet titled "SUMMARY" showed correct figures in the "Amount" columns for you in more than 1 row?

@ Cs26kit

Thanks for making me recheck my summary sheet for json creation.

Indeed, CG and OS are missing totally, which are my income sources. Also missing TI_TTI which is absolotely necessary.

My IT, and TDS1, TDS2, TDS3 showing and the data is correct.

Now I realize the reason for json creation failure.  Terrible coding by InFy team.

And there could be many other things not captured, not visible to us, but needed for acceptable json by the IT Portal.

@ Ranjan

Yes. I rechecked again too. No CG, OS, TI-TTI & was shocked to see what I previously ignored. Some schedules, despite being filled, show up among the "Empty" schedules. This is indeed a shoddy job that wastes users' time, leaving them second-guessing themselves whether the errors are due to their own fault.

The last line of your post above hits the core issue.

@ Cs26kit

I forgot to mention that I tried another experiment to check if that solves the json creation problem.

I added full Self Assessment tax calculated amount in the Schedule IT to get rid of any self assessment tax remaining to be paid and went through all the steps for json creation.

No success.

Every problem remained as it was earlier.

Finally closed this modified file, deleted it and got back one from my last backup.

Now keeping that file for data import whenever the properly working utility shows up.

Of course, I do not know whether data import will work or I will be forced to do donkey work again, filling up all data manually.

i am not able to fill the information in itr 2 are you director in any company..option is in gray all other orpn and fill

Read all the posts in this thread by spending some time and you will get the answer.

I found another issue in this newly released ITR2 excel utility .  In Schedule CG – Capital Gains, Item B(1) under  Item 1 Long Term Capital Gain From Sale of land or building or both, sub item biib cost of improvement,  only 2 rows have been provided for inputting Toal Cost of improvement yearwise.  There is no provision to add rows on need basis as is available against other items elsewhere in the return form. I have a case where improvement expenses of different amounts have been incurred 4 times in different years, during the period of holding of   14 years after 2001.  Unable to claim this propertly  because of absence of provision to add more rows here.

@ Sasidharan G

Just add all the 4 expenses and put the year as the last expenses' date for the improvement.

And you or your client should hold onto all the receipts of the 4 expenses for explanation, if ever required ( 7 years I think ).

Thanks to you and the many others who have posted their issues with ITR-2 Excel Utility for AY2025-26, and some resolutions for them.  I too faced most of the issues like you all with my ITR-2 with pre-fill data imported, viz :

  • Sch Salary applicability set to N (only OS and CG Incomes in my case), but Compute Tax insists on Sch Salary Ser 1 being filled.
(Instead of restarting & manually filling the Excel, I enabled Sch Salary, entered crap in all fields of Company 1, selected and set Basic Salary to a non-zero value, and clicked around a couple of times till that amount was shown in the Total Salary field (total field was not auto-updated the first time after value entry in Salary details row, but got updated after clicking around a bit).  Then deleted all the data from every field that I had entered using Delete key. The now-empty Sch Salary then validated successfully.)
  • Sch EI (Exempt Inc) applicability set to N or Sch EI left empty, but Compute Tax insists on a non-0 total EI amount.
(Enabled Sch EI and hit delete key on every field. Verify of Sch EI succeeded after that.)
  • Compute Tax was successful after that and computed correct tax for my CG & OS Inc, but Generate JSON created the Summary screen with no mention of Sch CG, 112A, OS, CYLA-BFLA, etc. (i.e., all Scheds with Income data for the ITR were missing from the Summary; only Sch TDS & TCS showed correct amounts in the Summary).
  • Anyway, went ahead and clicked button "Save JSON" on the Summary screen, and got the error "Compile error in hidden module: GenerateJson".
This was on a laptop with x64-bit processor and Win-10 Pro 64-bit OS and a licensed MS 365 (new MS Office) with Excel 32-bit installed.  So, the issue is NOT that module GenerateJson is written for 32-bit Excel and has problem with 64-bit Excel (suggested by MS Help as a possible reason for the above compile error)...
    .
Then I saved the filled ITR-2 Excel workbook & copied the Excel file to another Laptop with Win-10 Pro 64-bit OS and 64-bit MS 365 and Excel installed. Opened the Excel file there, Computed Tax and Generated JSON again. Had the same issues with contents of Summary screen as before...
But on clicking the "Save JSON" button...  VOILA - Success !!
The Json file was successfully saved in the same folder as the Excel file!!
    ------
So, looks like the "GenerateJson" module is either built only for 64-bit Excel, or it is checking the OS version (32 or 64-bit) instead of the Excel version (32 or 64-bit) for activating the version-dependent portion of its code.
If the utility works correctly on a computer with a Win 32-bit OS & 32-bit Excel, then the latter is the case; but I don't have such a computer to test this theory...
    .
Anyway, hope the above helps some of you to Save the Json file...
If you have only one 64-bit Computer with a 32-bit Excel or 32-bit MS 365 installed, try this :-
First Save your filled up ITR-2 Excel file (using Save or Save As).
Then try to download & install the 64-bit version of Excel using your current license.
It should be allowed as per my understanding of MS licenses (this works for MS 365).
Then opening the previously saved ITR-2 Excel using the 64-bit Excel software should allow you to Save the Json file as it did for me...

    Note:
I have not yet tried to Upload the Json file to IT Portal...  I don't know if that will work.
(I haven't paid the due Self Assessment Tax yet.  So, don't want to upload the ITR with tax payment balance still due - just in case the upload succeeds but doesn't let me update the payment info later... WIll pay SAT, update my ITR-2, generate a new JSON and try to upload that... Will let you all know how it goes..)

All the best to all of you (and me) for filing the IT Returns this year...

@ Krishnamurthy B.

Welcome to the team for taming the beast.

One query.

Is it only 32bit vs 64bit issue or does the Excel has to be the latest ( 2024 or 2025)?

If It is the last option then 98% or 99% filers are ruled out, including myself for filing using this utility. I cannot spend 1 lakh or more to get a new laptop with latest 64 bit Windows ( 11? which is claimed to be full of bugs) with 64bit Office ( 2025 ?).

It is extremely unbecoming for I-T Department to allow release of such an utility for a country like India.

And Infosys should be ashamed for creating such an utility. Hope Nandan and Salil are reading this thread.

Posting the other thread link which has some more tips on the bugs, just in case if helps  https://www.caclubindia.com/forum/itr-2-foreign-asset-details-not-editable-in-excel-utility-525271.asp?offset=1
