Is there exemption to the training program and company secretary course

I am a third year law student thinking about pursuing CS but I have a few doubts regarding it. Kindly experienced professionals in the field guide me through it:

Is there an exemption from the CS 15 months training program? Considering I sit for CSEET this year I will not be able to complete the course while in law school and probably will have a job in some law firm. I can manage to clear the exams but training program is an issue. Is there an exemption that if I have some experience in a legal department, then I don't have to do the articleship? Please help me through it to make a well informed decision.

Hey! About your question on the CS training program exemption:

As per ICSI (Institute of Company Secretaries of India) rules, the mandatory 15 months of training (articleship) is a key part of the CS course and generally cannot be exempted just based on prior work experience, including legal department experience.

Here are a few points:

  • Training is compulsory: All CS students must undergo the prescribed 15 months of training to qualify.

  • Experience in legal dept. or law firms: Unfortunately, prior work experience in law firms or legal departments does not qualify for exemption from this training.

  • Partial exemption: There might be some limited exemptions or reductions for those who have cleared certain levels or hold certain qualifications, but not purely based on work experience.

  • Timing flexibility: You can start the training anytime after clearing the relevant CS exams; it does not have to be immediately after exams, so you can plan accordingly.

If you're juggling law school and CS, you might want to:

  • Complete your exams first, then start the training.

  • Or seek part-time/internship training opportunities aligned with CS requirements.
