Industrial training

I am in my second year of Articleship and now want to undergo Industrial Training in the third year. I am going to serve the intimation to my Principal my plans for Industrial Training. Whether I should serve written or oral intimation. If in writing then what will be the format for the same?

Further I know that he will refuse the same as I am the only article in his firm. What are the steps I can take to convince him?
