Tax queries 221 views 1 replies

I have to live in two different cities 15 days in Mumbai and 15 days in Bangalore for my work. I have rent agreement for both the house in my name and PAN number of owner mentioned in it. Can i claim consolidate HRA for both the cities in my income tax return? I have rent receipts for both the houses for 12 months and all payments are made through banking channels. What are the factors i have be careful about before claiming HRA.

Claiming HRA for Two Cities You can claim House Rent Allowance (HRA) for both cities, but there are certain conditions and factors to consider: -

*Rent Agreements*: Ensure both rent agreements are in your name, and the PAN number of the landlord is mentioned. - *Rent Receipts: You have rent receipts for both houses for 12 months, which is good. Ensure the receipts are properly documented and match the rent agreements. -

Payment through Banking Channels*: You've made payments through banking channels, which is compliant with tax regulations. Factors to Consider Before claiming HRA for both cities, be mindful of the following: -

*Actual Rent Paid*: Calculate the actual rent paid for both houses and claim HRA accordingly. -

*HRA Exemption Limit*: The HRA exemption limit varies based on the city (Mumbai and Bangalore are both considered for HRA calculation). Ensure you calculate the exemption limit correctly. -

*Metro vs. Non-Metro Cities*: Mumbai is a metro city, and Bangalore is also considered a metro city for HRA purposes. This affects the exemption limit calculation. -

*Documentation*: Maintain proper documentation, including rent agreements, receipts, and payment records, in case of an audit or scrutiny.

Claiming Consolidated HRA You can claim consolidated HRA for both cities, but ensure you calculate the exemption limit correctly based on the actual rent paid and the city's exemption limit.
