Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies the new Ayushman Bharat insurance scheme and its relation to existing Central Government health insurance (CGHS). It addresses whether individuals, including senior citizens, can benefit from both schemes. The conversation also touches upon coverage limits, exclusions like critical illnesses, and the process for dependents, noting that Ayushman Bharat primarily covers secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation.

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is a government-sponsored health insurance scheme that provides coverage up to ₹5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.

This scheme is available to over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families, approximately 50 crore beneficiaries. For central government employees, the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) is a comprehensive health care program that offers a range of medical facilities, including dispensary services, specialist consultations, and hospitalization.

Now, regarding your question about availing both insurances, senior citizens (above 70 years) can avail of the benefits under the Ayushman Bharat PMJAY, even if they are already covered under other public health insurance schemes like CGHS or ECHS..

However, they can choose to either opt for Ayushman Bharat PMJAY or continue with their existing scheme.

As for porting to a long-time paid-up policy, some popular health insurance options in India include:

- *National Health Insurance Scheme*: Offers coverage up to ₹5

Thank you for the elaborative answer to the question , Appreciate the effort .
Just taking it further while checking the information and as put in by you, weather is there any limit to any type of dieases , hospitalization , room cost etc as done is usual health insurance .

A person holding a pvt insurance , can also apply for this scheme and avail the benefit of the same, but as you mentioned  secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. does it mean like Critical hospitalization will not be covered and what about the PED which needs regular hospitalization and like people having dialises etc and the fine lines of the claim for the family like dependents or all the members of the family .

Presuming this is also like cashless and card based system.

One thing I'd add to this discussion is that government schemes like Ayushman Bharat and private health insurance don't always compete—they often complement each other. Eligibility, hospital network, waiting periods, room rent limits, and coverage for pre/post-hospitalization can vary a lot, so it's worth understanding those differences before assuming one is enough for every family.

Many people only compare premiums, but checking the policy details and claim experience is just as important. If someone is trying to compare plans side by side in a simple way, I found https://BimaScore.com/?INT0082 useful because it focuses on understanding and comparing health insurance options rather than just pushing a purchase.

The more informed people are before buying a policy, the fewer surprises they'll face when they actually need to make a claim.
