15,000 it seems..... because in 80D it is specified that a parent of a individual has to be a resident senior citizen for  claiming 20000 deduction

80D is available only if insurance is taken with

Insurer covered:This deduction is available for medical claim policy which should be framed in this behalf by

  •
  • by GIC(General insurance Corporation) or by
  • any other insurer but approved by IRDA(Insurance Regulatory Development authority)

Kindly refer to Explanation to Section 80D (4) and sub section 4 itself

For the purpose of this sub section "Senior Citizen" means an individual resident in India who is of the age of 65 years or more at any time during the P.Y.

It seems that when it comes to senior citizen (whether himself or parents), he should be a resident to calim deduction of Rs. 20000.

15000 oterwise 20000.

similar view.

Additional deduction for Resident Senior Citizen u/s 80D

Therefore father is NRI then additional deduction of Rs. 5000 is not available to him

Beforehand,

NRI means he is not residing in india.

Policy should be brought in india, which has geographical locations within india.

if the payment is made to any overseas insurance , then no such benefit available under 80D
