Excel Utility

I had written to the Helpdesk Team of the Income Tax Department after receiving the following error message while filing my return:

“Acknowledgement number of Form 10IA filed for Self and Dependent can’t be same. Please provide proper acknowledgement number.”

In response, I received the following reply from them on 29th September 2025:

Resolution:
“With respect to the concern raised by you, kindly remove the details from Section 80U and then proceed to file the return. Alternatively, you may file the return using the Income Tax Common Offline Utility or the Excel Utility to resolve the issue.”

I could not resolve the issue using the offline utility, so now I need to try the Excel Utility. However, I am unable to open the Excel Utility on my system.

Could anyone please guide me on how to open and use the Excel Utility?

Quick Summary
This discussion addresses issues encountered while filing Income Tax returns using the Excel Utility. The original poster faced an 'Acknowledgement number' error and was advised by the Income Tax Department to use the Excel Utility. After facing difficulties opening it, they received guidance on system requirements and enabling macros. Further problems with JSON file import and 'Compile error in hidden module: ImportJson' were discussed, with solutions involving enabling macros and updating Java. The issue was eventually resolved with Office 365 and JSON import, though minor glitches remain.

@ Bikash Ghosh

You have to extract the excel utility from the zip file first.

For ITR-2,3,4, the Utility would be a folder containing one xlsm file + 2 folders.

And you will need to use Windows 10 or Windows 11 , 64bit, with Minimum Office 2019 or later or 365 and a machine with at least 8 GB RAM and fast Intel or AMD processor

Thank you Mr. Ranjan for giving the direction promptly. I have followed the same and now I am getting an alart (pop-up) message while importing JSON file in the Excel Utility.

Heading: "Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications"

Message: "Compile error in hidden module: ImportJson."

Could you please advise me in fixing this issue to proceed further?

@ Bikash Ghosh

You must enable MACROs in your excel program before using the excel utility of the ITR.

MACRO is enabled and still I am getting the same alert message.

@   Bikash Ghosh

Try updating Java in your machine. Latest one is version 8.61

@ Bikash Ghosh

Your problem is solved ?

Microsoft Office 365 has been installed and import of JSON file is done in Excel Utility. But still few glitches are there after importing JSON file. Thank you for doing follow-up.

@ Bikash Ghosh

For solving the other glitches, refer to my various other posts in the forum.

Surely, I shall follow the things suggested by you.
