Hi! I wanted to know more about the CPA coursework as I am contemplating shifting to the US. Does an Indian CA get any exemptions in terms of papers that he/she won't have to give or do they have to give all of them? Does the coursework also require articleship? If yes, then of how many years ? Also I have heard that even after the CPA degree, one needs to give a state specific exam depending on the state in which he/she wishes to reside in the US, Is that true? It would be great if somebody could throw some light on this. Thanks in advance.

CPA requires 4 years of work experience before you are a CPA. This experience can be before or after qualifying the exams. As for exemption there is none available to Indian CA.

Yes the licencing for CPA is state wise and you have to obtain different licence for 50 states in the US. Also one problem that indian CAs face is the problem with eligibility requirement as minimum eligibilty is 4 years' bachelors degree, which in India is mainly for professional courses like Btech, etc. Hence options for Indian CAs gets limited as only few states recognise CA as degree program. Uptil 2011,Colorado was the preferred state for CAs however now the scene has changed. For detailed information you should visit Beckers CPA personally and ask them all the questions, they will be able to answer your queries.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a license issued in 55 states or territories of the United States that authorizes the holder to practice as a CPA in that jurisdiction. To earn the prestige associated with the CPA license, an individual is required to demonstrate knowledge and competence by meeting high educational standards, passing the CPA exam, and completing a specific amount of general accounting experience. The two most important aspects of becoming a CPA are passing the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting licensing requirements in the state where you want to practice.

As for CPA eligibility, you need 120 credits to appear for the CPA exam and 150 credits for the CPA license.
General rule: Every year of university education in India is equivalent to 30-semester credits of US education.
Some state boards award credit for international professional qualifications like CA. Though, you will not get any exemptions.

For international CPA candidates from India, generally 3-year commerce graduates from NAAC A universities who have scored a 1 st division are awarded 120 credits.
