ITR-2 JSON upload gives "Caught Error Description as null" error

Hi All,

I am helping someone file his ITR-2. I downloaded the recently released ITR-2 Excel Utility & entered the data. All sheets got validated as "OK". I calculated the tax & generated JSON. No issues this far.

However, when I tried uploading it on the IT website, it threw this very unhelpful error message.

Error: Please correct the below mentioned error(s) in the uploaded json and try again.

Error Descripttion:  "Caught Error Descripttion as null"

The Site itself does not know what the Error is but wants me to correct it while the Excel Utility says everything is ok! I tried rechecking all the entries in the Utility step by step, validated each sheet again, and regenerated a new JSON file but I keep getting the same error when I try to upload the JSON on website. How should I resolve this?

Thank you.

CS.

That “Caught Error Descripttion as null” message is classic ITD vagueness. Usually means the JSON file structure broke somewhere, even if validation said OK.

Thanks for the reply. I tried redoing evreything from scratch and tried reuploading the new json file only to get the same result. Is there any solution to this or do I have to lodge Grievance & pray in wait for a solution from ITD?

On a sidenote - Like the previous AY, is there going to be an online ITR-2 filing available this time around too?

In the online ITR 2 filing also all validations are reported error free but in the final verification stage i got the same message and when I went through the json file which was downloaded I did not see any error. I have raised a grievance with the screenshot for the IT grievance cell to revert. For my spouse the same ITR2 was uploaded and there was no problem. May be I see a issue in Capital gains which my spouse did not have. Just waiting for the clarification.

I am getting the exact same error.

Initially in online ITR-2 filing after successful validation. I took the preview and thought that everything is done now. But at the last momnet the error appeared "CAUGHT ERROR DESCRIPTION AS NULL" so I raised the grievance. It was informed to me to write an email to 'efilingwebmanager @ incometax.gov.in'. I did that but no response yet.

In the meantime, I tried with offline utility, created JSON successfully and went for upload on e-filing portal after login. But the same JSON is not being accepted and it's throwing the same error again. Have raised one more complaint, this time for offline mode. Waiting for reply.

Anyone can solve this issue ?

Good morning. I am here again.

ITD Dept wants Tax filers to be healthy [ if not wealthy ] by doing the tax filing exercise every day. The arm, elbow, wrist and fingrs would become super strong.

Jokes apart, forget about using the Excel [Mad]Utility for ITR-2.

Use the Offline Common Utility, which now has ITR-2 covered as well.

The Offline Common Utility also has bugs , but not as severe as the Excel [Mad]Utility. It is possible to create a json acceptable to the [EXTREMELY STRICT] json checker on IT Filing Portal. Both of you know how to overcome the relatively smaller bugs in the offline utility.

Best of luck

Hi @ Ranjan,

In fact, I used the common utility released for ITR-1 TO 4. Also, the system prompt me to upgrade it to the latest version which I did and then tried but no luck.

Thanks, anyways.

@ Pramod Shrawage

Sorry to hear that you have not succeeded even through use of the Common ( Microsoft Edge based ) Utility.

Hope Satya Nadella would now jump into the issue and tweak Infosys for torturing people with Microsoft software.

Hi

Post my grievance on this issue with IT Department, they have identified in my case based on the json file which I had sent,  that keying in descripttion in excess of 50 characters  will be throwing this error. In my case since the json was uploaded, they have identified the exact field. Upon correcting it ,I could successfully upload the file and complete the process. Hope the system starts restricting it to 50 characters.Hope it helps

@ Subramanian,

Thanks for this feedback.

Let me also try and find the descripttion fields having more than 50 characters. Will check and confirm soon.

@ Subramanian M

It is really great that Income Tax Department [ software people] responded and identified the problem.

Your feedback would help many ITR-2 and 3 filers I hope.

@ Pramod Shrawage

Good luck.

Would await your feedback.

I could finally submit my ITR-2 today.

So, it was the same problem. In the EI section descripttion field, the number of characters were more than 50 which I reduced to lesser than 50. This worked well. I then uploaded the json file through offline mode and e-verified successfully.

Incidentally, I too received the grievance resolution from IT Department suggesting to change the characters to less than 50.

So friends the form does not restrict you while you input 50+ characters, the validation report also comes as success but the error comes when you try to verify or upload the form. Hope IT department corrects this error so that others do not get frustrated just like us.
