company secretary career options

Hi,

Can a company secretary work in an investment bank or stock broking firm or Banks or even an insurance company. Chartered Accountants get job in the above fields.

Are Company Secretary recognized to work in the above fields ??

Is "Secretarial Compliance" the only field a company secretary can work??

what other option does a company secretary have ??

A company Secretary can work in any field as he will be knowing Accounts, taxation, FEMA, SEBI , Law and Practices.

He will be the best person to analyse the risk management of the company. A CS can also shine as Porfolio Manager and others. At this point of time I can tell you one thing The gates are just started to open :)

A CS Is a multi dimenional career with an attribute of additional qualifiaction of legal side.

You don't worry, the value of CS is always there and is going to be booming like anything.

Once you have 4 to 5 years of experience then you will feel what is the value of CS...

You try to pass CS the rest will taken up by your profession provided your dept in knowledge :)

i understand .. see i have already completed my exams ,,, i have 6 more months of training left .. now if i get into a secretarial service job .. after 5 years i cannot get into investment Banking or get a bank job or an insurance job because i will be considered as a fresher in that particular field.. if there has to be a career choice to be made .. one should make it before joining the first job .. as a fresher can a company secretary get into portfolio management .. cos company secretary course has portfolio management ,.. forex management in the syllabus .. i think there should be some kinda recognition .. the CS institute does not help at all ... ICAI has established really well .. not a lotta people know that there is a course called CS  ..

In most job portals .. the qualification for financial services are CA/CWA/MBA ... you neve see a CS there ,,,

does that mean company secretaries will not get jobs in any other field ... ???

Noway man . I am handling also Risk Management of Goenka Group company, I know may people in Insurance field, who is VP's and others who are sitting in Top levels .

But you have to ensure which field you are going to specialise. Its all upto you. Oppurtunities are there. Once you get CS do take ICWAI also. Because after 10 years of experience there are a lot of companies who is requiring Finance Controller cum CS and CFO Cum CS.

Guys you should take your career step by step. No need to worry on such a small issu like this. If you don't like secretarial works tehn why did you join this profession ?
I can only tell you one thing CS profession is not just preparing notice and minutes and filling of forms, its far ahead than that. The Profession can give you only a platform to launch  your career and life. It you who is driving.

It is not necessary that being a fresher you should get all things, it will take time.

There is no need to complain the course, Secretarial work is only a part of CS .

At this point I can tel you one thing, Change your Attitude towards your profession, its you attitude determines the altitude of your profession.

So take it is easy and update regularly and never stop learning.

it has to be understood that a person who has completed CS or CA must have huge potential ... i'm not talking bout the people who jus study and mug up everything and clear CA or CS .. i'm talking bout people who have finished CS or CA with an attitude to learn and acquire knowledge ... i wanna be in finance ,,, all fields in finance .. like portfolio management .. insurance .. retirement planning etc etc ... i will acquire the respective knowledge on the job cos i'm eager to learn ,,, but having a reputed qualification like CS .. Companies should recognize the potential in the candidates and take them in those fields ... u don see that happening for CS .. but it happens for CA .. a Chartered Accountant can work in an insurance company .. Bank ,,, retirement benefits ,,,credit rating agencies ,,auditing ,,, taxations ,, corporate finance ,,, stock broking firms ,,, internal audit etc etc .. its not that they learnt or acquired the specific knowledge from the course .. they get such opportunities cos .. the companies which recruits them believe that chartered Accountants can handle the job .. learn quickly .. take up responsibilities etc etc .. thats y CA are of great demand ,,,  company secretaries are also capable of doing such work ,,, but we are not recognized .. what i am trying to discuss in bout the recognition of the course ...

i mean no offence to the chartered Accountant course .. i have great regard to the CA course  ....i'm a CA inter myself ... since i kno the syllabus of both the courses .. i feel that .. wat a CA can do .. even a CS can do ...  why are company secretaries not getting the recognition they need ... !!!

the bottom line is that .. we don want to restrict our career to only legal compliance .. boredom might strike one day ... we wanna do more ... learn more .. explore more .. get more opportunities ,,, perform better ..

KAVIN, I AGREE  WITH   YOU  THAT GOOD CS ARE  CAPABLE TO DO ALL THE WORKS THAT CA CAN PERFORM. BUT IT'S ABOUT PEOPLE'S MINDSET. WE ARE LIVING IN A ERA OF SPECIALISATION SO EVERYBODY WANTS THE SERVICE  OF SPECIALIST AS PER THEIR REQUIREMENT. EVEN YOU AND I  AT THE TIME OF MEDICAL TREATMENT WANT TO GET SERVICE OF SPECIALIST DOCTORS NOT GENERAL DOCTORS. IT'S  NOT THE  INEFFICIENCY OF GENERAL DOCTORS BUT IT'S OUR MINDSET ABOUT A SPECIALIST. SO I.E ALSO TRUE FOR CORPORATE  WORLD. SO IN MY OPINION  IF YOU REALY INTERESTED IN THE ABOVE MENTIONED FIELDS THEN YOU SHOULD GO FOR C.F.A(EITHER FROM ICFAI OR FROM USA) OR C.M.A( FROM CIMA) OR M.B.A FROM GOOD BUSINESS SCHOOL. THIS ADDITIONAL DEGREE WITH CS WILL DEFINITELY HELP YOU TO REACH AT YOUR DESIRED ALTITUTE IN YOUR CARRER. BEST OF LUCK FOR YOUR CAREER.

Hi,

I agree with u that we can go for investment banking and stock broking firms anyway we can have our training with stock exchanges also. In my opinion we can go for this kind of employment. we can do it with more experience in this field.

Hello Kavin,

First of all thanks for sharing your feelings.......

As far as recognition for a CS is concerned, the ICSI had not taken any initiative at all for promoting the course, like ICAI had done wonders in the promotion and marketing of CA course.

Secondly, brother let me tell you that plenty of CS are associated with the big merchant bankers like Goldman, morgan stainley, hsbc, etc.

Plenty are associated with SEBI.

Bhai it is just a start of your career, it is not yet decided that what u wll be doing rest of ur life, just do ur home work and belive in urself, U can do whatever you want.

Regards

Rajat
