PFRDA is a statutory authority established by an Act of Parliament to regulate, promote, and ensure the orderly growth of the National Pension System (NPS) and other applicable pension schemes.

NPS was initially for central government employees recruited after 1st January 2004, and has since been adopted by most state governments for their employees. It is also available to all Indian citizens (resident/non-resident/overseas) on a voluntary basis, and to corporates for their employees.
