Income Tax Department Cracks Down on Tax Evasion in Educational Institutions

Last updated: 16 January 2025

The Income Tax Department has intensified its crackdown on tax evasion within the education sector, conducting nationwide surveys targeting schools suspected of financial irregularities. The department's Exemption Wing has flagged several institutions, accusing them of practices like selling seats to evade taxes.

On Monday, a survey was carried out at R Mangalam School in Delhi-NCR, which operates a network of 14 schools and colleges across India. The action followed multiple complaints alleging tax violations by the institution.

Allegations Against Educational Institutions

Sources reveal that the complaints against R Mangalam School include allegations of selling regular seats and those reserved under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota, which is mandated by government policies to promote affordable education.

Officials further disclosed that some schools, while registered as providers of affordable education, misuse provisions to operate as premium English-medium institutions. The Exemption Department has been tracking these irregularities for a significant period, leading to this enforcement action.

Government's Focus on Transparency and Accountability

The ongoing surveys underscore the government's commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in institutions that benefit from tax exemptions. Educational institutions enjoy significant tax benefits but are expected to comply strictly with the rules, especially concerning reserved seats and affordable education initiatives.

The results of these surveys will likely determine further action, as authorities aim to curb tax evasion and misuse of public provisions within the education sector.

Why This Crackdown Matters

This intensified scrutiny sends a strong message about the government's focus on maintaining ethical practices in sectors that are pivotal to national development. Tax evasion by educational institutions undermines the integrity of the system, depriving deserving students of opportunities and impacting public trust.
