Public sector banks have seen an improvement in the recovery of gross non-performing assets (NPAs). The recovery rate, as a percentage of NPAs at the start of the financial year, rose from 11.33% in FY2017-18 to 14.69% in FY2019-20, according to Reserve Bank of India data. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic in FY2020-21, the recovery rate remained strong at 12.28%. The government is also taking action against wilful defaulters, with assets worth over Rs. 19,000 crore attached and a significant portion restituted to banks.
