FAQ :
The PAN 2.0 Project is an e-governance initiative by the Income Tax Department (ITD) to re-engineer taxpayer registration services. It aims to enhance PAN services through technology, consolidating all processes for PAN allotment, updation, corrections, and TAN-related services into a single platform, and offering online PAN validation.
Currently, PAN services are spread across three portals. PAN 2.0 will integrate all PAN and TAN services, including allotment, updation, correction, Aadhaar-PAN linking, and online PAN validation, onto a single, unified ITD portal. It will also focus on comprehensive paperless processes and taxpayer facilitation, with PAN allotment and e-PAN being free.
No, existing PAN cardholders do not need to apply for a new PAN under the PAN 2.0 system. Your current PAN card will remain valid.
Yes, you can make corrections to your existing PAN details, such as name, date of birth, email, mobile, or address, free of charge once the PAN 2.0 Project commences. For now, Aadhaar-based online facilities can be used for updating email, mobile, and address.
Yes, your existing valid PAN cards will continue to be valid under PAN 2.0. While PAN cards have included QR codes since 2017-18 for validation, older cards without them will still function. You have the option to apply for a new card with a QR code if you wish.
The Income-tax Act prohibits holding more than one PAN. PAN 2.0 will improve systems for identifying potential duplicate PAN requests and has an enhanced centralised mechanism for resolving duplicates, which should minimise instances of individuals holding multiple PANs.
